MFi Certification Explained: C89, C94, and Why Uncertified Lightning Cables Die
If you have ever seen “This accessory may not be supported” on an iPhone, you have met an uncertified Lightning cable. The message is not a compatibility warning. It is authentication failing.
What MFi actually is
MFi (Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod) is Apple’s licensing program. A manufacturer joining it gets access to the authentication IC that lives inside the Lightning connector head. That chip cryptographically identifies itself to iOS.
The important detail for buyers: you cannot make a compliant Lightning cable by copying the connector shape. The chip is the license. Apple ships the connector modules to licensed factories and counts them.
This is why Lightning cables cost more than USB-C cables of equivalent build quality. Part of the unit cost is the licensed module.
C89 vs C94
Two connector module generations are still in circulation:

C94 is what enables the fast-charge path on iPhone 8 and later. A USB-C to Lightning cable built on C89 silicon will charge, but slowly, and it will not negotiate the PD profile the phone expects.
When sourcing USB-C to Lightning, specify C94 explicitly. “MFi certified” alone does not tell you which module is inside. Our USB-C to Lightning lines use C94.
How uncertified cables fail
They usually work at first. Then:
- iOS update breaks them. Apple periodically revokes cloned authentication chips. A cable that worked for three months stops working after a point release.
- Intermittent charging. The chip fails authentication under load, charging cuts, resumes, cuts again.
- Data refused entirely. Charging may continue while sync stops.
For a distributor this is the worst failure mode, because returns arrive months after the sale, well past the point where you can do anything about the shipment.
Verifying a supplier’s MFi claim
Ask for these, in this order:
- The MFi account number. Licensed manufacturers have one. It is not confidential.
- Which module generation — C89 or C94, in writing.
- A sample tested against a current iOS release. Not last year’s device. Current.
- Packaging artwork approval status. Apple reviews retail packaging for MFi products. A supplier who has never gone through artwork review has probably never shipped a licensed retail product.
If a supplier quotes a Lightning cable at the same unit price as a comparable USB-C cable, the licensing cost is missing from the bill of materials. That tells you what you need to know.
Where MFi does not apply
USB-C to USB-C cables for iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPhone 15 and later do not need MFi. Those ports are standard USB-C, governed by USB-IF, not Apple licensing. If a supplier tries to charge an MFi premium on a USB-C to USB-C cable for an iPhone 15, that premium is fictional.
The dividing line is the connector, not the brand of the device.
